The Front

  • From winter quarter of 2022 to winter quarter of 2023, The Front has undergone some big changes.

From being back in person for almost a full year, to our paper going international, as some staffers were able to work abroad thanks to The Front now being a digital-only newspaper, to a major lesson experienced by the fall 2022 staff, we are looking forward to learning from last year and finding more opportunities to improve!

With our staff this winter, we have more new than returning members, which is a big change from previous quarters!

This quarter as winter EIC, I alongside my Managing Editor, Madisun Tobisch, worked to make some big changes to The Front.

We have continued to fix and update our Guest Piece Policies and created a new position titled, “Diversity, Inclusion and Outreach Editor,” whose sole job is reaching out to underrepresented communities to create a safe and welcoming space where their stories can be heard and celebrated.

Our goals this quarter are to rebuild our relationship with our readers, create a strong and diverse team among our reporters and editors and continue to create good journalism.

The quarter has been off to a great start thanks to our extremely hardworking editors and our committed reporters. We have some big plans for the rest of the quarter, starting with some really cool investigative journalism.

We plan to continue to build The Front to be the great newspaper we know it can be and look forward to taking our readers with us on that journey.

    Sincerely,

Elaina Johnson, The Front Editor-In-Chief, Winter 2023

Public Relations Society of America

  • The Western Washington University Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Chapter has returned! After facing challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re thrilled to announce that our Chapter is back and better than ever, thanks to the dedication of a passionate group of journalism students.

We’ve already seen a surge in student engagement and interest, and we’re just getting started. This spring, we’ve rolled out a lineup of exciting events designed to immerse students in the world of PR, including agency tours, insightful workshops and networking opportunities with industry professionals.

But our ambitions don’t stop there. We’re gearing up to attend the PRSSA national conference, ICON, in Anaheim, California, this fall. To make this dream a reality for as many WWU students as possible, we’re getting creative with fundraising efforts. We’ve already begun seeking PR agency sponsorships and have hosted special events like campus bake sales and our professional headshot fundraiser.

However, to sustain our momentum and provide valuable opportunities for our members, we need your support. Your donation will empower us to continue fostering the next generation of PR professionals, equipping them with the skills and experiences they need to thrive in the industry. Additionally, we welcome sponsorship from agencies or organizations affiliated with our esteemed alumni.

Invest in the future of PR by supporting the WWU PRSSA Chapter today. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives and careers of aspiring communicators. Thank you for your generosity and belief in our mission!

Society of Professional Journalist

  • This year, the WWU Society of Professional Journalists has been hard at work providing opportunities for students to expand their classroom knowledge and empower their careers.

Thanks to the unwavering support of the journalism department and Chapter fundraising, they sent SPJ officers to Las Vegas for the SPJ National Conference last fall. This provided them with the invaluable opportunity to engage with industry leaders and attend thought-provoking keynotes and panels. Next year, the Chapter hopes to have funds to bring more students to the national conference.

Moreover, SPJ has brought enriching and insightful sessions to campus, such as a discussion on ethical and inclusive language writing, an overview of broadcast journalism, tours of both MyBellinghamNow and Cascadia Daily News, informational student editor panels for WWU publications and so much more! Their sessions have effectively allowed students to expand their classroom knowledge and bridge their skills into a real-world context.

Your support is crucial to the Chapter’s ability to continue providing student resources. By donating to the WWU SPJ Chapter, you are directly investing in strengthening the resources available for young professionals who are shaping the future of the journalism industry.

Join us in making a positive difference in the world of journalism. Your support will enable us to continue supporting fellow journalism students and providing an educational space that empowers students and encourages ethical standards.

    Thank you!
