There’s something about spring quarter. 

I started teaching journalism at Western during spring quarter of 2014. Six years later, the pandemic turned me into an online instructor in spring quarter of 2020. Now I’m looking forward to being back in the classroom for, naturally, spring quarter 2022. 

In addition to my work at Western, I’m on the executive committee for the Washington Coalition for Open Government. WashCOG is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocate for public records, open meetings and informed citizens.   

Last fall, I and the president of the League of Women Voters of Washington cowrote op-ed pieces that took the Washington State Redistricting Commission to task for its secrecy. Our opinion columns were published by The Seattle Times and The Spokesman-Review. Let’s hope the redistricting commissioners read at least one of them.

I’m eager to see Western students and my department colleagues in person again.
